Boxing Day

Boxing Day in Australia

Boxing Day in Australia is a public holiday that falls the day after christmas. Boxing Day originated in England where the day after Christmas Day was spent "boxing" gifts and giving them to the less fortunate.

A quiet day is often spent recovering from the lead up to Christmas and the festivities of Christmas Day by watching the Cricket (Boxing Day Test match) or the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race on TV. Many Australians also head off on holidays or go to the Boxing Day Sales and grab some bargains or prepare for the next celebration - New Years Eve!

Fatal Storm: The 54th Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race
Fatal Storm:
The 54th Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race

It is ten years since Australia's largest peacetime search and rescue mission was activated in heinous, storm-ravaged conditions off the southeast coast of the mainland.

It came when the 115 yachts contesting the 98th edition of one of the world's great sporting events, the Sydney to Hobart race, were engulfed by hurricane-like conditions. Six sailors perished, another 55 were plucked to safety through the incredibly heroic deeds of rescuers. At the peak of this calamity the mountainous, breaking seas were the height of a ten-storey building.

Fatal Storm is the internationally acclaimed bestseller that gave an enthralling inside account of the tragedy. Now, a decade later, Mundle revisits the disaster and appraises its consequences on many of the key players. He also discovers how a catastrophe of this magnitude has benefited search and rescue operations worldwide.

Twenty-two events are recreated in all their drama - ranging from the technically challenging to the most physically demanding, including the extraordinary America's Cup and the Admiral's Cup, the great ocean and offshore classics, and the awesome round-the-world races. The book is divided into four sections - Offshore Classics, Ocean Classics, Round-the-World Races and Inshore Races - each covering several events.
