Artist Statement - Tips on Creating an Artist Statement
An artist statement should be informative, easy to read, and give the reader an understanding of you "the artist".
The artist statement should not contain information about exhibitions, education, awards as these are already included in your CV.
Try to include some or all of the points below:
Vision
What you are trying to achieve though your arts practice. Describe your creative process, philosophy, vision, and passion.
Media
Why you use the media you do. If the choice of media is related to the content or conceptual underpinning of the work, an explanation should be included as well.
About
Discuss techniques used, if it is a series, metaphors and themes.
Mention specific terms in your artist statement such as line, colour, shape, value, space form and texture, and the principles of design.
Influences
Artists, Art Movements that influence and inspire you.
An artists statement is a living document that should change as your work moves in different directions. You will need to check and update it each time you give or post it in any application process.
If you're unsure of where to start - look for examples of other artists statements on the internet and use these examples as a guide.
